Avery Dennison labels approved for PET tray recycling
RecyClass has granted its first Technology Approvals for the PET thermoforms recycling stream to two Avery Dennison direct thermal PP label technologies. Testing confirmed their compatibility with European PET thermoform recycling processes.
Avery Dennison has received the first RecyClass Technology Approvals for the PET thermoforms recycling stream for its AD CleanFlake Thermal PP White S7000ER and AD CleanFlake Thermal PP White C7010ER technologies. The approvals confirm that both label solutions are compatible with existing European recycling processes for PET thermoforms and can support the development of packaging designed for circularity.
The approved technologies combine a direct thermal polypropylene (PP) facestock with a releasable adhesive. They are intended to replace conventional paper-based direct thermal labels applied to PET trays. According to the information provided, users can retain their existing direct thermal printing equipment while improving the recyclability of PET thermoform packaging.
RecyClass granted the approvals after testing conducted in accordance with its Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for Labels & Lids Applied on PET Trays. The assessment covered the behaviour of the label constructions during the recycling process, including the separation of the facestock and adhesive from the PET tray.
Label separation under hot washing conditions
Labels can have a significant effect on the recyclability of PET thermoforms. Under the RecyClass Design for Recycling Guidelines and the requirements of EN 18120-5, labels should detach during caustic hot washing and should not leave significant adhesive residue on the tray surface. Efficient separation of labels and adhesives is required to maintain recyclate quality and recycling process efficiency.
The approved Avery Dennison constructions use a releasable adhesive to facilitate label removal and minimise contamination. Their validation provides packaging manufacturers, converters and brand owners with additional options for improving the recyclability performance of PET thermoform packaging and pursuing RecyClass Recyclability Certification.
Recyclability requirements for PET thermoforms
The approvals come as the first provisions of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) have started to apply and the packaging industry faces more demanding circularity objectives. Label systems designed for separation in established recycling operations can support the compatibility of PET trays with these processes.
RecyClass encourages companies to assess new packaging technologies through dedicated recyclability testing. According to the organisation, scientifically validated solutions are necessary to improve plastic packaging recyclability and increase the availability of high-quality recycled plastics in Europe.
