Röhm strengthens Worms site and global production network
Röhm has commissioned a new sulfuric acid plant at its Worms site, reinforcing its global MMA and PMMA production network. The modern unit replaces a facility damaged in 2023 and supports regional MMA supply.
Röhm has strengthened its largest production site in Worms and its global production network by commissioning a new sulfuric acid plant. The Worms site plays a strategically pivotal role in the company’s network. Röhm is the only global manufacturer of methyl methacrylate, MMA, and polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA, with production sites in Europe, Asia and North America. The new unit was brought online after one and a half years of construction.
In recent years, the company has made targeted investments to reinforce this position, including a significant expansion of PMMA production capacities and the construction of an innovation center at Worms. The new sulfuric acid plant is equipped with modern technology and is designed to increase efficiency and strengthen the regional supply of MMA.
The facility replaces the previous plant, which was damaged by a fire at the end of 2023. Sulfuric acid is a key precursor for MMA production. MMA is an important basic chemical for customers in the automotive, construction and medical technology sectors, and underpins the PMMA value chain.
Integrated production and customer supply
At the inauguration, COO Hans-Peter Hauck emphasized the role of the new unit in supply security and the company’s value chain. "With the new sulfuric acid plant, we are not only increasing supply security for our customers, but also strengthening our value chain in the long term," said COO Hans-Peter Hauck at the inauguration ceremony. The project exemplifies Röhm’s integrated production principle, focused on producing in the region for the region, with the aim of providing regional proximity, delivery reliability and planning security.
Project execution and safety
The construction project stands out for its occupational safety record and execution discipline. "The fact that we were able to implement the new plant not only on time and within budget, but also in accordance with the highest safety and quality standards, is an outstanding achievement," emphasized COO Hans-Peter Hauck. "My thanks go to the project team and all the colleagues involved – your commitment and expertise are exemplary for what makes our Worms site special: high-performance production, innovative research and a strong team."
