VERSO tests digital passports and packaging reuse

2026-10-22

AIMPLAS is leading the VERSO project to test Digital Product Passport models and reuse systems for plastic packaging. The work covers traceability, eco-design, life cycle impacts and regulatory compliance.

VERSO tests digital passports and packaging reuse

AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, is leading the VERSO project, which aims to support digitalisation and the circular economy in the packaging sector through the application of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and the validation of reuse systems. The research is intended to improve the traceability and transparency of plastic packaging throughout the value chain, while supporting eco-design and the transition towards more sustainable production models. It also addresses compliance with European regulatory requirements. The project involves ITC Packaging and Reciclamás and is funded by the Valencian Institute of Competitiveness and Innovation (IVACE+i) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). VERSO is intended to produce solutions that can also be replicated for other products and sectors.

The project continues the work started under OASIS, while extending its scope to the production of sustainable packaging and the implementation of digital tools. OASIS covered legislative aspects and the basic principles of the circular economy as applied to recycling and waste management. VERSO shifts the focus towards the development of reuse systems and the practical use of the Digital Product Passport as a tool for regulatory compliance and communication with end consumers.

Eco-design based on the SSbD methodology

VERSO applies a comprehensive eco-design approach based on the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodology. This method enables the assessment of environmental, social and economic impacts, as well as risks specific to the packaging sector. Its application is intended to support the development of packaging that is more durable, reusable and recyclable, with optimisation covering the entire life cycle and waste prevention given priority in accordance with current legislation.

Sonia Albein, leading researcher in Circular Economy and Environment, said: "this project responds to the need to overcome the technical, legal and market challenges facing the plastic packaging sector, offering solutions that can be replicated in other products and sectors. Its main objective is to generate accurate and up-to-date information that enables companies in the Valencian Community to improve their competitiveness, make informed decisions and move towards more sustainable production models."

Validation of reuse systems and digital passports

The work includes the practical validation of new reuse systems and the development of models for the efficient application of the Digital Product Passport. The passport is expected to provide traceability and transparency for each packaging item, from its design to final management.

AIMPLAS is carrying out the project in collaboration with ITC Packaging, a manufacturer of plastic packaging for different sectors, and Reciclamás, a company specialising in waste management and recycling. Reciclamás contributes expertise in the recovery of post-consumer materials.

The expected results include the design and validation of packaging in line with reuse criteria and the preparation of a roadmap for sustainable packaging management. The project will also apply the SSbD approach to assess impacts and risks and conduct a pilot implementation of the Digital Product Passport. In addition, the partners will develop good practices covering the full product life cycle, with particular attention to waste prevention and regulatory compliance.

VERSO is conducted under a grant programme for collaborative research and development projects involving technology centres and companies in the Valencian Community. The programme is promoted by IVACE+i and receives funding from the ERDF.
