Innovia Films launches high-barrier metallised BOPP film
Propafilm CHBM is an 18 μm metallised BOPP film developed as a polypropylene-based alternative to aluminium foil in recyclable flexible packaging laminates.
Innovia Films has introduced Propafilm CHBM, an ultra-high-barrier metallised biaxially oriented polypropylene film designed for flexible packaging applications. The 18 μm film is intended to replace aluminium foil in polypropylene-based laminate structures, supporting the development of recyclable mono-material packaging while retaining the barrier properties required for sensitive products. According to the manufacturer, the film combines oxygen and moisture barrier performance with metal adhesion and thermal stability. It is designed to protect products that are sensitive to oxygen and water vapour, helping to preserve freshness, aroma, flavour and quality throughout the supply chain. The launch addresses demand from brands and converters for packaging structures that combine product protection with improved recyclability.
Propafilm CHBM has high optical density and enhanced metal adhesion, intended to support reliable performance during converting. Its reverse side is treated for lamination or surface printing. The material is available in a thickness of 18 μm, equivalent to 0.72 mil.
Properties and packaging applications
The main properties specified for Propafilm CHBM include:
- ultra-high oxygen and moisture barrier performance;
- a polypropylene-based alternative to aluminium foil;
- protection of aroma and flavour;
- enhanced metal adhesion for converting;
- high optical density;
- reverse-side treatment suitable for lamination or surface printing;
- thermal stability;
- suitability for recyclable mono-material PP packaging structures.
The film is intended for high-barrier food packaging, mono-material laminates, stand-up and flat pouches, applications requiring the replacement of aluminium foil, and packaging that needs a high level of protection against oxygen and moisture.
"As brands continue to seek packaging solutions that combine high performance with improved recyclability, Propafilm CHBM represents another significant step forward," said Alasdair McEwen, Business Unit Director Packaging EMEA at Innovia Films. "By delivering the barrier performance traditionally associated with aluminium foil in a polypropylene-based structure, Propafilm CHBM enables our customers to simplify packaging designs without compromising product protection."
The new grade expands Innovia Films' portfolio of BOPP films for flexible packaging. It was developed to address performance, sustainability and circular economy requirements in the packaging industry.
