Südpack Medica to present packaging solutions at CPHI

Südpack Medica will showcase a range of packaging solutions for the global medical, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries at booth 11K25 during CPHI Worldwide in Milan. The film manufacturer will focus on recent product developments intended to combine packaging reliability, functionality and patient safety. The presentation is part of the Südpack Group’s strategic work on film and packaging solutions that address sustainability objectives while maintaining the performance required in regulated healthcare applications. In recent years, the company has introduced several packaging solutions developed in line with design-for-recycling guidelines and adapted to different applications and requirements.

Packaging concepts with recycling considerations

One of Südpack Medica’s key products is PharmaGuard, a blister packaging concept for solid oral dosage forms. According to the company, the PP-based blister films are free from phthalates, vinyl, PFAS and halogens. They provide a water vapour barrier, push-through performance and processability on standard packaging machines.

Compared with aluminium- and PET-based laminates, the films have a significantly lower climate impact according to a Sphera life cycle assessment verified in accordance with ISO 14040/44. Südpack states that this is partly due to the high PP content, which allows the material to be directed into existing recycling streams.

Südpack Medica also offers an integrated portfolio of packaging systems for medical, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications in the healthcare sector. The range includes rigid and flexible films, standardized and customized pouch concepts, and lidding systems made from plastics and medical-grade papers. Where required, these materials can be produced under controlled clean room conditions.

The solutions are designed to support product protection, stability and sterility along the process chain. They can be equipped with specific barrier properties and opening aids, and are intended for highly automated packaging processes.

Development, testing and validation support

To support system compatibility, Südpack Medica works with selected suppliers of paper and lidding materials as well as packaging machine manufacturers. The aim is to configure, test and optimize sealing performance and opening behaviour for the equipment platforms used in industrial packaging production.

The company also uses its in-house laboratory facilities to measure mechanical, thermal and functional film properties. These capabilities are intended to support customer-specific requirements and validation processes.

At its technical centre in Ochsenhausen, Südpack Medica offers sealing tests with MedGuard films in combination with different lidding materials. The trials allow targeted evaluation of sealing ranges, peel performance and process robustness, supporting packaging development before commercial scale-up. Where required, Südpack Medica also coordinates joint optimization tests with customers and their machine suppliers.

Conference presentation on sustainability

As part of the Packaging & Drug Delivery conference programme, Jürgen Bodenmüller of Südpack Medica will join representatives from a machinery manufacturer and a pharmaceutical company to discuss the challenges associated with introducing new recyclable solutions in the pharmaceutical industry. The session will also address how such solutions challenge established industry paradigms.

The speakers will present practical approaches and share insights into strategies for reducing the climate impact of pharmaceutical packaging while maintaining efficiency and high barrier performance at industrial scale.
