Syensqo expands certified circular Fomblin portfolio
Syensqo has obtained UL Environmental Claim Validation under UL 2809 for Fomblin Y fluids. The company is also investing in fluorine recovery at its Spinetta Marengo site in Italy.
Syensqo is expanding its portfolio of circular high-performance fluids following UL Environmental Claim Validation for Fomblin Y under UL 2809. The verification responds to customer demand for circular specialty materials and supports more resource-efficient industrial practices. It also aligns with the objectives of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, CRMA, which seeks to strengthen European resilience by increasing the circular use of strategic raw materials.
The validation builds on certification obtained by Syensqo in 2025 for selected high-performance elastomers and lubricant fluids. With the addition of Fomblin Y in September 2026, the company has extended the range of products covered by its certified circular portfolio. Around 40% of the fluorine content allocated to the newly certified products through a mass balance accounting approach comes from post-industrial recycled hydrofluoric acid, HF.
Fluorspar, the primary mineral source of fluorine, is classified as a critical raw material under the European Union's CRMA. Recovering fluorine from post-industrial waste can reduce dependence on primary critical raw materials and support the resilience of European value chains.
Investment in fluorine recovery
Syensqo is also investing at its Spinetta Marengo manufacturing site in Italy to expand recycling capabilities and increase fluorine recovery. The project is intended to support demand for circular high-performance fluorinated elastomers and fluids across multiple industries. It will also increase the availability of recycled raw materials for the company's specialty polymers portfolio.
"Our customers are increasingly looking for high-performance materials that enable them to use resources more efficiently while strengthening the resilience of their supply chains," said Tom Wood, Vice President, Head of Product and Asset Management at Syensqo. "The expansion of our certified Fomblin portfolio, together with our investment in recycled fluorine recovery at Spinetta Marengo, demonstrates how we are responding to this demand at an industrial scale. By recovering and reusing fluorine locally, we can reduce reliance on virgin resources while helping build a more circular and resilient European fluorine value chain."
The expanded validation and the investment at Spinetta Marengo form part of Syensqo's work on circular solutions for fluorinated materials. The objective is to enable customers to increase the use of recycled raw materials while maintaining the performance and reliability required in demanding industrial applications.
