Xenia Materials and CNR to develop smart composites
Xenia Materials and the Institute for Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials of Italy's National Research Council will jointly develop advanced composites for injection moulding and pellet- and filament-based 3D printing.
Xenia Materials, an Italian developer and producer of high-performance thermoplastic composites, has signed a collaboration agreement with the Institute for Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). The cooperation is intended to strengthen links between industry and research through advanced research and experimental development focused on new smart materials. The planned work will address market requirements related to lightweight design, high performance and technological innovation.
The partners will combine complementary capabilities. IPCB-CNR will contribute the scientific expertise and multidisciplinary capabilities of its 73 researchers and 11 technologists. Xenia Materials will provide more than 30 years of industrial experience in reinforced composite materials, together with its knowledge of emerging technologies and applications.
Materials for moulding and additive manufacturing
The agreement focuses on developing materials engineered for injection moulding, a key technology for industrial production, as well as for advanced manufacturing platforms, including pellet- and filament-based 3D printing.
The partners plan to formulate materials that combine tailored engineering properties with integrated smart functions. The targeted capabilities include self-healing behaviour, energy absorption, electromagnetic interference shielding and electrical conductivity.
Advanced composite architectures reinforced with carbon fibres, nanofillers and graphene will be used to provide optimised mechanical performance and greater design flexibility. The research will support the development of high-performance applications in engineering-intensive sectors, including aerospace, defence and energy.
"This partnership represents a concrete step toward industry-oriented research, where scientific knowledge and processing capabilities are integrated to accelerate the development of cutting-edge material solutions," states Fabio Azzolin, CEO of Xenia Materials. "A shared pathway aimed at creating new composites designed to anticipate the technological and application-driven challenges of the coming years."
Research expertise in an industrial context
According to the partners, the cooperation is intended to support technology transfer from public research to manufacturing processes and accelerate the industrial application of research results.
"This agreement represents a strategic step towards leveraging the Institute's scientific expertise in a concrete industrial context. The collaboration with Xenia Materials will allow us to develop specifically optimized advanced engineered materials, accelerating technology transfer and the impact of research on manufacturing processes," states Pietro Russo, materials engineer and senior researcher at IPCB-CNR.
The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between Xenia Materials and IPCB-CNR in materials research, experimental development and the transfer of new composite technologies to industrial applications.
