Syensqo polymers in cardiac, spinal and surgical devices

2026-11-02

Syensqo reports applications of its advanced materials in cardiac devices, spinal and orthopaedic implants, and surgical equipment. The company is also working with medical-device developers at the design stage.

Advanced polymers are used in medical devices where properties such as biocompatibility, mechanical performance, visibility during imaging and resistance to sterilisation affect product design. Syensqo has outlined several applications of its materials in cardiothoracic care, cardiac and orthopaedic implants, spinal surgery and surgical instruments. The examples involve different requirements, from temporary protection of the heart after surgery to long-term implantation and unobstructed X-ray imaging during an operation.

The company works with medical-device manufacturers to select materials for applications where conventional materials or metals may not meet all design requirements. "Behind every medical device is a series of critical choices about how it needs to perform, both for healthcare professionals and for patients," said Natalie Dragunat, Global Marketing Manager, Healthcare at Syensqo. "Our role is to bring advanced materials science into that equation, helping medical-device innovators solve complex challenges and turn new possibilities into technologies that can make a difference in patient care."

Applications in cardiac care and spinal surgery

Thoracic Innovations uses a Syensqo high-strength resin in a sternal spacer designed to protect the heart and stabilise the chest when it must remain temporarily open after certain cardiothoracic procedures. For long-term cardiac implantation, Biotronik selected a Syensqo high-performance polymer for its pacemakers. According to Syensqo, the material combines biocompatibility for indefinite implantation with transparency that supports precise electrode placement during surgery.

In spinal surgery, a Syensqo biomaterial is used in a spinal fusion cage developed by Shanghai REACH Medical Instrument. It combines mechanical properties relevant to bone with bioactive functionality designed to support bone integration.

Surgical equipment and orthopaedic implants

Hanisch Medical and TechImport developed an orthopaedic surgical guide using a Syensqo advanced polymer. The guide is up to 70% lighter than traditional metal versions and permits unobstructed X-ray imaging during surgery. MezLight uses a Syensqo high-performance polymer in a reusable surgical task light. The material supports durability and repeated steam sterilisation, while the device provides focused illumination and is designed to reduce the physical strain associated with traditional surgical headlamps.

GLW Medical Innovation uses a Syensqo high-performance polymer in its ApolloAnkle Fracture Plating System. The system combines 3D-printed titanium with a polymer described as having bone-like properties. It is intended to support fracture fixation while improving visibility during medical imaging.

Materials input during device development

Syensqo says it draws on more than 60 years of high-performance polymer innovation and works with manufacturers early in device development. In 2026, it joined MedTech Innovator, a global accelerator for medical-device, diagnostic and digital-health companies, to provide materials and application expertise to emerging healthcare companies.

"Some of the most important decisions in medical-device development are made at the very beginning of the product design," said Marie-Beatrice Madec, Head of Marketing Life Solutions at Syensqo. "That’s why we work with innovators from day one, bringing advanced materials expertise into the design process when it can make the greatest difference, while staying alongside them as their technologies evolve, from initial concept to solutions ready for the healthcare market."

Syensqo also plans to attend Compamed 2026 in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 16 to 19 November, at booth 8AL14, to meet medical-device manufacturers and developers.
