At Fakuma 2026, Arburg will demonstrate automated production of a wireless key cover from PC/ABS recyclate on the vertical Allrounder 475 V. The application combines In-Mould Decoration, robotic handling and component data for recycling.

Arburg will present the vertical Allrounder 475 V with a clamping force of 1,000 kN at Fakuma 2026 in hall A3, stand 3101. A demonstrator producing a wireless car key cover will illustrate the machine's use for manual and automated overmoulding of inserts, particularly for mobility applications requiring high-quality surfaces. The machine is designed for standard applications in e-mobility, electronics and medical technology, including the overmoulding of cables, contacts and infusion accessories. Its features include a compact installation area, additional space for larger moulds and the new Gestica lite control system, intended to provide simple and intuitive operation. The exhibit will also demonstrate how the vertical machine can be integrated with decoration, robotic handling, laser marking, milling and cleaning processes in a fully automated production cell.

PC/ABS recyclate and In-Mould Decoration

The demonstrator is a cover for a wireless control key, based on the "Generic Keyfob" design from Huf, a supplier and development partner specialising in vehicle access and authorisation systems for vehicle manufacturers. The component is produced from a post-industrial recyclate based on PC/ABS.

The surface is manufactured using Leonhard Kurz's Protective Layer Finish technology for In-Mould Decoration in combination with a structured mould insert. Instead of a conventional transfer system, the process uses a thin PET carrier that remains permanently attached to the component. The decoration is located behind this carrier, which serves as both a protective layer and a support.

The thin PET film, including the decoration system, is fed into the mould from outside by a feed unit. In-mould lamination then applies the decorative film to the plastic surface. The mould is supplied by Schöfer, a subsidiary of Kurz; Meusburger provides the standardised components, Reichle supplies the mould insert design incorporating the Arburg logo, and Witosa provides the hot-runner technology.

The cover is punched to a rectangular shape in the mould, while the remaining film is wound up within the installation space of the vertical machine. According to the supplied information, the product can be recycled. The PET layer provides resistance to abrasion, impact and everyday wear, helping to extend the component's service life. Films with different designs and colours can be exchanged to manufacture product variants.

Automated handling and finishing

The Allrounder 475 V can be combined with a six-axis robot or a linear Multilift robotic system. Possible automation tasks range from sprue removal and demanding component handling to customised production cells incorporating upstream and downstream process steps.

In the application presented at Fakuma, a Kuka six-axis robot performs the complete part handling sequence. It removes the moulded component and transfers it to a laser station, where a code is applied. The robot then moves the component to a milling station and guides it along the milling path with its gripper. This removes excess film and produces the final contour. The cover is subsequently deburred at a cleaning station before the robot places it on a conveyor belt for discharge from the production cell.

The automated application is also presented as a practical example of the R-Cycle initiative. Recycling-related information, including material composition, can be accessed through the code on the component. Such digital product passports are intended to support data-based material flows and a closed plastics cycle.

Compact installation and servo hydraulics

The Allrounder 475 V has been available since spring 2026. Despite its compact footprint, the machine provides space for larger moulds. Its standard installation height is 250 mm and can be extended by either 100 or 200 mm. The table height is 900 mm.

The vertical machine is equipped as standard with the Arburg servo hydraulics system. By reducing idling losses, this system lowers the specific energy requirement by up to 60% compared with conventional hydraulic machines.
